A leading cheese producer recently encountered a significant challenge after expanding their production facility. The expansion required a pump capable of seamlessly integrating their Clean-in-Place (CIP) and production systems – transferring hot mozzarella cheese. Initially, the company chose a competitor’s double screw pump, but it quickly became evident to them that not all double screw pumps are built equally!
While the competitor’s pump initially met performance expectations transferring the hot mozzarella, issues soon arose. The pump struggled to achieve the necessary high speeds and flow rates to fully clean the system with the CIP solution. By increasing the speed to try and get the lines clean, the competitor pump was overheating, which warped the screws and destroyed the mechanical seals. A new set of screws were prematurely required and mechanical seals failed regularly due to the stress, with replacement seal kits costing €9,000 each. This was not only enormously expensive but resulted in production downtime and strained the workforce.
The Fristam solution
Faced with mounting costs and inefficiencies, the cheese producer sought a better solution. They turned to the Fristam FDS double screw pump, hoping the FDS could achieve the dual functionality of pumping both product and CIP that the competitors pump couldn’t.
After discussing the application and the system in detail, it was decided that the customer should opt for an FDS with a long screw design. This elongated screw offers even gentler pumping (perfect for delicately pumping mozzarella cheese) and even higher volumes. By opting for this type of screw, the producer was able to downsize the pump without loosing any efficiency, which helped to save on running costs (smaller pump = smaller energy consumption) and valuable floor space!
A Game-Changing Solution
The FDS 3L-2 pump transported hot mozzarella cheese with care, maintaining the product’s integrity during production. When switched to CIP mode, the pump operated at speeds of up to 3,600 rpm, ensuring a thorough and efficient clean. By pumping product and CIP in a single pump, the company eliminated the need for a separate CIP pump, significantly reducing equipment requirements and simplifying operations!
