DOUBLE SCREW PUMP

3 in 1 – Pumps product, CIP and scavenges. Ideal for soft solids.

In 2015 Fristam set about developing this exceptional pump, setting new standards in double-screw technology. Fast forward to today and Fristam are now the leading manufacturer of hygienic double screw technology in Europe!

FDS whitepaperProcess flexibility – 3 pumps in 1: Reducing costs, simplifying the process, standardising factory lines.
Where multistage processes are concerned, handling a wide variety of different products as well as CIP lines is common. Ordinarily multiple product pumps would tackle each application individually and additional CIP pumps were required for cleaning. However, with an FDS, this can be a thing of the past…

Due to its design, an FDS double screw pump, is equally capable of switching between:

1) Pumping multiple different products
2) Scavenging product – where maximising yield is important
3) Pumping CIP

With such a wide envelope of capabilities, a single FDS can be capable of replacing multiple pumps! Learn more about this here.

The ultimate problem-solving pump.
The Fristam FDS double screw pump is offered for a wide variety of applications, but it can really prove its worth when combatting these particularly challenging applications:

  • Pumping product with soft or hard particles, which need to be kept intact during transfer.
  • Pumping extremely viscous applications – up to 1 million cP.
  • Pumping shear sensitive products.
  • Pumping products with large volume of entrained air, or air pockets.
  • High suction capabilities – for IBC, drum or tanker emptying.
  • Pumping degassed products out of a vacuum tank.
  • Exceptional hygiene requirements – every Fristam pump conforms to the strictest worldwide standards, but the FDS design is particularly hygienic due to its open, fully flushed mechanical seal area. Sterilisation possible.

Maintenance has never been simpler.
Thanks to its compact size and specially designed bearings the Fristam FDS can be mounted horizontally as well as vertically.
Inspection and maintenance have never been as simple as this: seals and conveying elements can be exchanged easily and quickly.

FDS Powerpack Designs – High Pressure Pumping
For the highest-pressure applications, Fristam can supply an FDS power-pack option. This fabricated skid consisting of 2 FDS pumps stacked vertically above one another can withstand extreme pressures.

Built with your application in mind.

We work with you to gather deep insights into everything from the characteristics of the product being pumped, to the wider process set up. Every Fristam FDS pump is made to order to suit your exact requirements.

With 9 different standard screw types to choose from, we ensure your FDS is tailor-made to fit your application perfectly.

Selecting the perfect pitch: With 9 different standard types of screws and many more special screw versions available, we ensure your FDS is tailor-made to fit your application perfectly. This also gives us the possibility that if your FDS pump changes function within your line (perhaps you need to pump yoghurt now, instead of chocolate sauce), we can replace the screws to suit this new application, rather than changing the whole pump.

Movement: Rotating in an axial motion, contact free screws run practically pulsation free, even in high pressure conditions. The screw design helps pull thick viscosity product without cavitation. Non-flowing mediums & products with high air content are transferred without air-locking.

Ultra hygienic, seamless to change and easy to access.

Enhances hygiene – Mechanical seals are located in fully flushed, open areas directly behind the screws. This ensures there are no dead or restricted areas within the pump where product residue could be concealed following a CIP cycle.

Seal material selection – We factor in a number of variables when selecting the ideal seal material for your application such as temperature, abrasiveness, chemical compatibility and running speeds. Asking the right questions from the start enables us to get things right first time, every time.

Average seal lifespan – when considering our nearest competitor, due to our pumps design we can accurately estimate that a seal lifespan will last at least 5 times longer in an FDS pump.

Compatible with any design

FDS pumps can be mounted horizontally and vertically, reverse flow and be easily integrated into any existing process. Ports can be moved the side of the pumps and will be compatible with any size and shaped inlet you desire.

Strong and durable pump shafts, even under extreme pressure

The FDS shafts have strength in their area of critical diameter, ensuring maximum rigidity even under extreme pressures. Made with a duplex steel enables operating temperatures to be kept to a minimum and smooth running is maintained, which delivers a smooth and consistent flow.

Designed with easy access in mind.

Easy access: Designed with easy access in mind, the FDS gearboxes unique patented design enables the cover to be removed just by turning 4 screws. The pump and its drive can then be inspected whilst the pump is in situ.

Optimised bearing support: A combination of especially large bearings and increased bearing distance gives an FDS superior stability, necessary for high pressure conditions. Optimal lubrication: FDS bearings are fully submerged in the optimal volume of gear oil, which flows along a circulation path. This helps the gearbox maintain a low temperature, even at high speeds.

FAQ

What makes the Fristam FDS a hygienic twin-screw pump?

The Fristam FDS is EHEDG-certified and designed for ultra-hygienic applications. It features fully flushed mechanical seals and an open internal layout with no dead zones, allowing CIP and SIP fluids to reach all product-contact surfaces. This ensures complete cleaning between batches and compliance with strict hygienic requirements.

Is the Fristam FDS pump suitable for CIP and SIP cleaning?

Yes, the Fristam FDS is fully CIP- and SIP-capable. Its design allows it to pump cleaning liquids at high speeds and thin viscosities, removing the need for separate CIP pumps. The open seal area and high-velocity CIP flow ensure residue-free cleaning.

Can the Fristam FDS handle high-viscosity products?

Yes, the Fristam FDS handles viscosities up to 1 million cP. Its strong axial screw design pulls thick products without cavitation or pulsation, making it ideal for applications like mayonnaise, fruit purée, or meat suspensions.

Is the Fristam FDS self-priming and able to handle air?

The FDS is self-priming and can handle up to 70% air. Its twin-screw configuration allows it to maintain flow even with air pockets or gas slugs, making it ideal for applications involving foamy, aerated, or suction-sensitive products.

What materials are used in the Fristam FDS construction?

The Fristam FDS is made from 316L stainless steel with duplex shafts. Gasket options include FKM, EPDM, HNBR, and FFKM. The pump is built for durability and chemical resistance under harsh CIP/SIP and processing conditions.

What are the typical flow rates and pressure limits for the FDS?

The FDS series delivers flow rates from 0.5 m³/h to 500 m³/h and pressures up to 25 bar. This wide performance range makes it suitable for everything from low-volume dosing to high-throughput transfer lines in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical applications.

Can the Fristam FDS be mounted vertically or in confined spaces?

Yes, the FDS offers flexible installation, including horizontal, vertical, or side-mounted configurations. This adaptability simplifies retrofits and tight-space installations in hygienic process environments.

How easy is maintenance on the Fristam FDS twin-screw pump?

Maintenance is quick and straightforward with the FDS. It features front-loading semi-cartridge mechanical seals and a patented gearbox that’s accessible without removing the drive, minimising downtime and simplifying seal replacement.

Is the Fristam FDS compatible with abrasive or shear-sensitive products?

Yes, the FDS safely transfers abrasive and shear-sensitive media. Its wide-pitch, contact-free screws gently convey soft particulates like cooked fruit or meat chunks without damage, and abrasive seal materials can be selected to match application needs.

What options are available for the Fristam FDS twin-screw pump?

Fristam offers tailored adaptations such as ATEX certification, heated jackets, mobile units, and high-pressure power packs.
Screw geometry, port configurations, and gearbox ratios can also be customised for your process requirements.
